CHRISTMAS SEWING PROJECTS – PART 1

27/11/2020

This week I have been busy sewing projects for the Christmas table. These make great gifts, are easy and quick to make. There are many different Christmas sewing projects but two of the easiest are table runners and cutlery holders.

For the ‘10 minute table runner’ there are many videos available on YouTube but this one is one of my favourites for clear instructions and optional alternatives. Have a look at Cheryl’s video on The Sewing Room Channel if you would like to see just how easy it is to make a table runner.

I have used a selection of my Christmas fabrics and contrasting solids fabrics (available on the online shop) to make a few table runners this week. Using the print as the border/backing or a solid work equally well.

The runners can be embellished with ribbon trims and buttons for an even more festive look.

Cutlery holders are another easy project and look great on a simple white plate. These will compliment your table runner if you use similar fabrics or even contrasting fabrics.

If you would like to have a go at making these a very easy video to follow is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzrqUaJbMoY

I used 4.5inch fabric widths when making the holders as this was the best fit for my cutlery. I used scraps of cotton and polyester wadding cut to size in the cutlery holders that I made, some tutorials suggest iron-on wadding or a heavy interfacing. I made a variety of samples to illustrate how a range of different fabrics look. Your cutlery holders may be made from a single fabric colour/print choice or from combinations. Adding ribbon is another option and a little really does go a long way and to great effect. There are a lot of ribbon options to choose from on the website. A little festive button could also be added, see https://www.sewdublin.ie/shop-online/buttons/baby-novelty-buttons for a variety of festive buttons.

Maybe add a coaster to your table setting …… instructions for different coaster types will be posted next week

Once sewn a set of cutlery holders makes a lovely gift. Add some ribbon and your unique handmade gift is ready!

Another option is to use a panel to make your table runner and other table setting items. The Holiday Frost Panel is a favourite of mine…the project is a work in progress but the photo illustrates how I have used the panel to create the runner and placemats. A simple cutlery holder will add to the festive table. More sewing to be done this weekend!

Happy Sewing!
